The city is in the region Lower Saxony in Leer district. Borkum is the western and with 36 square kilometers largest of the seven East Frisian Islands in the southern part of North Sea. Norderney is 14 km long, from the widest points to the west end and in the middle of the island its width is up to 2.5 km and with 26.3 km ² it is the tenth largest German island. The city is in region Lower Saxony.
