The city is in the region Lower Saxony in Leer district. Borkum is the western and with 36 square kilometers largest of the seven East Frisian Islands in the southern part of North Sea. Because of the Gulf Stream on the island is a temperate climate, very hot in summer, very cold in winter. The island is by its oceanic location especially iodine.
