Norderney is one of the seven populated East Frisian Islands off the North Sea coast of Germany. It is also a municipality in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony. Norderney is 14 km long, from the widest points to the west end and in the middle of the island its width is up to 2.5 km and with 26.3 km ² it is the tenth largest German island. The city is in region Lower Saxony.
Norderney IslandThe population is approximately 6200 inhabitants. On the north side extends a 14 km long sandy beach, eastern the island is neighbor Baltrum, which is separated by the Wichter Ee, is only 800m away. In the west the island Juist about 3 km away - separated by the high reef, which has up to 20m water depth.

IslandIn the west Baltrum is separated by sea Wichter Ee from Norderney and in the east by sea Accumer Ee from Langeoog. They say, that the island called Baltrum because it were so small that was „bald rum“ („soon rum“). This alludes to the small size of the island. However, a complete circumnavigation of the island is about 15 km.
