It is a district town, the largest city of Rheinisch-Bergisch district and forms a secondary center with currently approximately 105,000 inhabitants. For that it is one of the smallest cities in the country. Bergisch Gladbach, about 10 kilometers east of the Rhine, rising strongly on the western edge of the Bergish Heights (Bergisch Land) opposite the Lower Rhine bay. On the west the town borders with Cologne.
