Speyer is historically and culturally significant city in the district Speyer. The town is located in the Upper Rhine valley at the mouth of the river Rhine to Speyer.

Sights

The most famous building is the Romanesque Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Stephen, where are buried many medieval emperors and kings, and in 1310 there married John of Luxembourg. Speyer own "Jewish Court" with the oldest completely preserved mikveh of 12 Century. On the outskirts of the town is interesting museum dedicated to technical resources, and particularly transport aircraft including the Boeing 747-230. In the city there is since 1990 a theater for children and youth. Municipal libraries have more than one million scientific books and a large number of different manuscripts.

The village is a state-recognized spa. Place of interest in Bernkastel is the medieval market square with its houses with half-timbered gables dating from the 17th Century, among which stands out pointed house Spitzhäuschen, coming from the 1416. Michael's fountain from 1606 with many other preserved buildings and Renaissance town hall from 1608 adorn the city. In the local part of Bernkastel lie the ruins of Landshut Castle, former summer residence of the archbishops of Trier, which was destroyed by fire in 1692. Also worth seeing the Graacher Tor, the only remaining city gate. The surrounding countryside is well known for wine growing.

In Idar-Oberstein is a railway station on the line Bingen-Saarbrücken. The village is north of Highway No. 50 and the airport Frankfurt-Hahn.
