The Erfurt Cathedral is the most important and oldest church in Erfurt. During the Second World War was the cathedral spared of direct bomb hits. However, roof and windows of the choir were partially damaged by explosions in the vicinity. In 1965 was the beginning of renewed by extensive restoration work. Gehlberg is located in county Ilm-Kreis in the region Thuringia. Gehlberg lies on the northern slopes of the Thuringian Forest on a plateau between the valleys Wilder Gera and Zahmer Gera. The site extends from about 680 to 750 meters altitude. The village is only about 600 meters from the district Grund and only about one kilometer west of the 978 meter high Schneekopf, the second highest mountain in Thuringia.
