Motovun is a medieval town that grew up on the site of an ancient city called Kastelijer. In the 10th and 11th centuries it belonged to the Bishop of Poreč. From 1278 it was taken over by Venice and surrounded by solid walls which are still intact today, and used as a walkway with unique views over the four corners of Istria.

Southern Pula has also been Istria´s administrative center since ancient Roman times. The city is best known for its many surviving ancient Roman buildings, the most famous of which is its 1st century amphitheatre, which is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world. The city has a long tradition of winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism.

Tourist destination

The city is a popular tourist destination. There is Brijuni national park or Tito´s summer residence. In the south of the city is tourist center of Punta Verudela above which rises the ramshackle Austro-Hungarian fortress.

Novigrad is a town and a municipality in southern Istria, north from the Novigrad. Novigrad is set on a small peninsula on the western coast of Istria, two kilometres north of the mouth of the river (Croatia) Mirna. The area covered by the municipality extends from the village of Dajla in the north to the mouth of the River Mirna in the south.

Sights

Novigrad has retained its medieval structure and layout, with narrow, winding streets and small shops. The fortifications belong to the medieval era: the town wall still stands with its battlements and tow round towers. There are examples of secular architecture from the time of the Venetian empire, such as the town loggia and several houses built in Venetian Gothic style.
